FORMER NSW Governor Professor Dame Marie Bashir has been appointed patron of both Technion Australia (NSW) and TSA Environmental Research.

Bashir has a long history of friendship with the Jewish community and is a staunch friend of Israel.

“Professor Bashir has had a long association with the Sydney Jewish community and has been a strong supporter of the Technion, attending a number of our events over recent years,” said Technion Australia (NSW) president Dr Ruth Ratner.

“We are very honoured that Professor Bashir, a woman who has reached the pinnacle of her medical, academic, and civil lives, has chosen to identify with the Technion, Israel’s leading scientific, engineering and technological university”.

Technion Australia supports the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology through a variety of activities and projects in Australia, with chapters in both Sydney and Melbourne; while TSA Environmental Research, an entity of Technion Australia, focuses on research into the natural environment of Australia and Israel, including in the areas of water purification and air pollution.

Bashir said that she was humbled and proud of Technion Australia’s request.

Speaking to The AJN Bashir said, “I was extremely touched and I feel deeply honoured; and I felt this is another opportunity to bring more people together and think about the joy and the rewards of working together.”

She will travel with Technion Australia to Israel in June next year to celebrate the award.

While in Israel, Bashir will visit the Technion in Haifa to observe the scientific, engineering and technological work for which the Technion is renowned.

Earlier this year Technion president Professor Peretz Lavie announced that the Technion would also be conferring on Bashir an honorary degree (Doctor Honoris Causa) for her “outstanding and significant contribution to psychiatry and mental health; in tribute to her public service and leadership in building understanding between people of all backgrounds; and for her support and friendship to the Jewish people, Israel and the Technion”.

The degree will be conferred at the Technion International Board of Governors’ meeting next year in Israel.
