$2 million for Jewish House to double capacity

A $2 million funding commitment from a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will allow Jewish House to significantly expand its crisis response capabilities.
The investment will support the not-for-profit to develop 12 self-contained units, effectively doubling its capacity to provide transitional housing and support to vulnerable community members experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, and other crises.
Member for Kingsford Smith Matt Thistlethwaite visited Jewish House in Bondi on Sunday alongside Wentworth Labor candidate Savannah Peake, to announce the funding.
“Jewish House provides essential services for our most vulnerable community members, and this $2 million investment will ensure they can help even more people in need,” Thistlethwaite said.
“This expansion will double the capacity of Jewish House to deliver crisis support services and provide transitional housing for those experiencing homelessness or domestic violence.”
Thistlethwaite added that “the Albanese Government is really impressed with the work that Jewish House do here”.
Jewish House CEO Rabbi Mendel Kastel expressed his organisation’s gratitude.
“This funding will allow us to expand and modernise our original building, which has been serving the community for over 40 years,” he said.
“This expansion is a major step forward in our mission to provide essential housing, case management, and mental health services to those in need. We’re excited about the future and the positive impact this will have on the community.
“It will really change the way that we deliver services and therefore it’s so vital. Thank you to the Albanese Labor Government for your continued support as we work together to make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
Peake emphasised the organisation’s long-standing contribution to the local community.
“Jewish House has been supporting our Eastern Suburbs community for years, providing critical services to people when they need it most,” she said.
The Government has confirmed that consistent with past practice, the election commitment will be delivered in accordance with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.
Meanwhile, online Jewish media outlet J-Wire revealed on Monday that the government has also committed $50,000 to Coogee Synagogue to refurbish its ageing kitchen and other fixtures.
It’s an important infrastructure upgrade to better cater for the community,“ Thistlethwaite told J-Wire.
The grant was due to be announced on Thursday by Thistlethwaite and local State MP Marjorie O’Neill.
