Kosher Meals on Wheels (KMOW) recently held an afternoon tea at St Kilda Shule in tribute to the long and dedicated 37 years of service by Lorraine Abel as office administrator at the organisation.

“I retired nearly three years ago but due to COVID-19 they couldn’t give me a reception until now,” Abel said with a smile.

“I’ve got eight great-grandchildren and six grandchildren, and my family and friends so there was plenty of activity that kept me busy.”

Immediate past president Menachem Cohen presented Abel, 88, with a silver platter and a certificate noting her positive and reliable attitude throughout the years.

Abel replied, “I can honestly say I enjoyed every day of my 37 years on the job. My first president, the late moss Davis, was the one who taught me how to organise distribution of the meals and how to handle general administrative tasks. He was such a wonderful, patient and understanding man.”

KMOW, a not-for-profit organisation was established in December 1973 to supply kosher meals to pensioners, the elderly, sick and incapacitated people as well as to other private hospitals whose in-patients required kosher food.

To date it has supplied in excess of one million meals to private clients, travellers, cruise ships, hospitals and privsons with 85 per cent of all meals delivered by a roster of dedicated volunteers.

David Southwick, Member for Caulfield, congratulated Abel at the event saying, “Lorraine is a star of the community, and her years of service speak volumes about who she is.

“If not for dedicated volunteers like Lorraine, Kosher Meals on Wheels wouldn’t be able to feed, support, and care for our community. In a time when food insecurity is on the rise, including in the Jewish community, this work changes lives.”

While speaking with The AJN Abel mentioned the ongoing need for helpers in the kitchen and volunteer drivers for the deliveries. “When I first started, I think we had 30 volunteers. But now, I think it’s down to 10 or 12.”

The afternoon tea wound up with KMOW treasurer Peter Bass presenting certificates of appreciation to volunteers.
