AFTER opening her heart and sharing her personal stories on the stage, singer Joanna Weinberg is releasing a CD of her acclaimed solo show The Piano Diaries.
The actress, singer and songwriter will launch the recording of what is her comical and dramatic personal journey with a live performance of the show in Surry Hills on November 6.
“I’m so happy, I absolutely love the CD, it has great production value, but it’s a different work of art, it is really its own journey,” she said.
The Piano Diaries, which is one of Weinberg’s nine one-woman shows, takes audiences on a captivating and enlightening journey of her life, includes 12 original songs centred around a piano, accompanied by monologues based on Weinberg’s genuine diary entries since she was 13.
In an effort to transform the musical performance from a live setting to a CD, Weinberg has slightly altered it, adding four musicians to the original three, while maintaining its original integrity and unique sass.
“The show is an autobiographical story, but the CD is a much more musical journey – I really fleshed out the piano songs to help bring the whole thing to life,” said Weinberg, who is currently a finalist in the Sydneyvision Song Contest and has been nominated for 11 awards.
She is hopeful that people will get as much enjoyment out of the CD as the show, with the added benefit of being able to listen to it as often as they like.
“I hope that people love the songs and want to sing along while sharing it with others and playing it in their car or house.”
Although Weinberg did a live recording of her recent cabaret show Twelve Shoes, she has always dreamed of launching a CD with the degree of depth and thought that has gone into The Piano Diaries.
“It’s not often that I’ve had the opportunity to work with seven musicians of such a high calibre.”
The 49-year-old said she is proud of her many years that stand as a testament to the longevity and growth of her career.
“I’m not shy of my age, because the maturity and breadth of my career has gone into making the CD, which isn’t a debut and it’s certainly not a swan song.”
The mother of two, who has not only been busy recording The Piano Diaries, but also recently wrote the songs and co-wrote the screenplay for the upcoming feature film, Goddess – based on Weinberg’s one woman show Sinksongs – still finds time for the other important things in life.
“I’m a Jewish mother at heart and my kids are central to my life, but at night and when they’re at school I work like a demon – I try to be around for them, but I work every other minute.”
The Piano Diaries will be launched at a live performance on November 6 at Venue 505, 280 Cleveland Street, Surry Hills at 7.30pm. Bookings: www.trybooking.com/VKC. The Piano Diaries will be available on iTunes a week after the launch.
