THE Zionist Federation of Australia (ZFA) held an “Aussie Day” for Australian olim and olot at Tzemach in northern Israel earlier this month.

Around 60 people registered and enjoyed a free ticket to Australian-themed zoo Gan Garoo, a picnic, a tour along the Jordanian border, a tour of the old train station and also took part in a service in honour of the Australian soldiers who fought there in World War I.

The ZFA said the event, which was held in partnership with Kinneret College, was a great success in bringing Australians together.

“We love that fact that while firmly laying new roots in Israel, they are also finding ways to stay connected to Australia through connections with other Aussies,” the ZFA said.

“In a time when they are further away from their families than ever thanks to closed borders, the ability to connect with other people who share a common background is something that cannot be taken for granted.”

ZFA Israel Office director Moriah Ben-David said, “Since the start of the global pandemic, the need for face-to-face interactions, specifically with other Australians, is greater than ever.

“The ZFA Israel Office decided that assisting Australian olim also should include creating spaces and platforms for young families, young adults and retirees to meet with other olim.

“The response after each event, and in particular the requests to join future events, has been amazing. People are looking for a ‘home away from home’ feeling.”

ZFA plans to organise many more similar events in the future.
