TWO young men in Melbourne have achieved the rare feat of learning a book of the Talmud by heart.
Avrohom Kaminetsky and Shimon Szmerling recently celebrated their achievement at a gathering at the Rabbinical College of Australia and New Zealand. The pair memorised the tractate of Ketubot.
Dayan of the Yeshivah Centre Rabbi Zvi Telsner praised the efforts of the boys, saying they should be an example for other students to learn with “added strength and vigor”.
“This should serve as an inspiration to all the talmidim (students),” he said. “If these two boys learnt the entire tractate, there must be ten others who can learn half a tractate, and more yet who can learn at least one or two chapters.”
Following the speeches, which included an opening address by Maggid Shiur of the Yeshivah Gedolah, Rabbi Shmuel Lesches, and guest speaker Rabbi Yaakov Barber from South Caulfield Hebrew Congregation, Kaminetsky and Szmerling presented their respective hadranim, or theses, which is tradition upon completing a tractate.
The boys were presented with vouchers to the value of $1500, which they plan to spend purchasing religious books.
