Comedian-turned-movie-star Tiffany Haddish has successfully tried her hand at authoring a novel, and it’s a big, fat finger to the bullies she encountered as a child. Layla, the Last Black Unicorn, about a loveable but awkward unicorn who learns that her uniqueness is her biggest strength, is loosely based on Haddish’s own experiences growing up, including some difficult memories about a childhood bully.

“It’s inspired by my childhood and how different I was and how hard it was for me to fit in. Realising that my differences can be my wins and it can help others, and so I wanted to share that with kids.”

Talking to E! News Daily Pop, Haddish said: “You can be out there with the haters that keep watching and spending money on my movies, and my books, and my TV shows, and my clothing line that’s about to come out, and you can keep following and watching all the things that I’m doing and just know, I was right, you was wrong.”

Haddish, who connected with her Jewish roots later in life, has signed a three-book deal with HarperCollins.
