First direct flight to Melbourne lands
After an initial rescue flight to Perth last week, a second El Al direct flight from Tel Aviv to Australia landed in Melbourne this evening (Thursday).
FOLLOWING a successful rescue flight to Perth last week – in which dozens of Australian citizens were brought home from Israel, and more than 250 Israelis returned to their families – a second rescue flight landed in Melbourne this evening (Thursday).
The journey from Ben Gurion Airport to Melbourne’s Tullamarine took
16 hours and 24 minutes.
The Australian embassy in Israel said on Tuesday El Al airlines was “finalising arrangements for another direct flight to Australia this week to repatriate Israeli citizens from Australia”.
On Wednesday morning it was confirmed that a flight would depart Tel Aviv at 5pm on Wednesday April 1, Israel time.
Meanwhile the embassy advised that for Australians returning to Melbourne, “Passengers will be required to undertake a 14-day mandatory quarantine at a designated facility on arrival in Melbourne.”
This is the second direct flight from Tel Aviv to Australia in El Al’s history, with Israeli ambassador Mark Sofer describing it as “a major operation of Israel’s Foreign Ministry and El Al with amazing cooperation from all Australian authorities”.
He added the embassy was “truly happy” to assist in bringing Australians back to their homes.
