Masada Celebrates

A viral kind of Purim

Purim may have been last week, but Masada College is still celebrating with their viral video.

As Purim drew to a close in Australia, one Sydney school was still celebrating. For 2022, Masada College put together a Purim video, with rewritten lyrics to the popular Bruno Mars song, Uptown Funk, to start the celebrations for the whole community.

It’s hilarious and entertaining and we weren’t the only ones to love it.

By that evening, it had gone viral, and was shared on Jewish Humor Central, a US-based daily publication that hopes to start every reader’s day with news from the Jewish world, to make people smile and laugh.
College principal Mrs Mira Hasofer said the school community was elated to see their video go international.

“We were determined to show that Jewish life at Masada is magical. We had fun and that’s what it is all about at Purim time,” she said.

By using child-friendly lyrics to a popular and trendy song, the video set the festival buzz, telling the story in a contemporary and captivating way.
The team behind the video rehearsed and filmed it in record speed.

Learning support teacher Eleni Dimitriadis cleverly choreographed the dance routines to ensure everyone felt confident to participate, and all faculties were included in the video from Rabbi Lewin to Mrs Hasofer, to the preschool teachers and through to the executive team.

But according to Masada, it was the maintenance team who stole the show.
“The staff thoroughly enjoyed making the video but by far the highlight was the student response as the video was played at the opening assembly for Purim. They absolutely loved it,” Hasofer recalled.

The wider community response has also been amazing.

“Our staff have become celebrities and have been stopped in the streets of the North and East,” Hasofer laughed.

Comments have flooded the video on social media, showing gratitude for the Masada staff for going above and beyond for the community and creating an amazing atmosphere at the college.

According to the college, COVID has taught the team that there are huge benefits to learning and having fun at the same time. After a tough couple of years, the community was ready for a huge injection of fun this Purim.

And celebrate they did!
