The Andrews Labor government has announced its support for a collaboration between Israel’s Sheba Medical Centre and Victorian universities, healthcare, and medical research institutions to enhance digital healthcare services for patients throughout the state.

This partnership involves the Labor government, Monash University, Monash Health and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre joining forces with Sheba Medical Centre to explore the potential establishment of an Accelerate, Redesign, Collaborate (ARC) Innovation Centre in Victoria.

An important objective of the collaboration is to bolster Victoria’s capabilities in commercialisation, healthcare innovation and entrepreneurship, facilitating the translation of cutting-edge research into tangible solutions.

“This partnership to boost digital healthcare will further cement Victoria’s position as a global leader in medtech manufacturing,” said Ben Carroll, Victorian Minister for Industry and Innovation.

The success of the ARC Centre in Israel, which collaborated with Sinai Chicago, the University of Illinois, the University of Chicago’s Department of Medicine, and ANDHealth to establish ChicagoARC, has provided further impetus for similar initiatives.

In another win for Victoria, Sheba is planning to launch its inaugural ARC Asia Summit in Melbourne next year.

This event, inspired by the annual ARC Summit in Israel, brings together 1000 delegates from the ARC community, along with executives from technology, medicine and public health sectors worldwide.

Minister for Trade and Investment Tim Pallas said, “This work stands to create significant healthcare benefits for Victorians, enhance our booming medtech sector and create more rewarding jobs.”

Victoria’s medtech sector currently creates $21.4 billion worth of revenue annually, with the sector’s export earnings reaching $3.5 billion, supporting over 31,000 jobs.

Sheba Medical Centre chief innovation and transformation officer Professor Eyal Zimlichman said, “Victoria and specifically Melbourne, with its top-tier universities and healthcare providers, holds unlimited potential in the fields of health and life science.”

Zimlichman added that Sheba looks forward to “working with leaders in Victoria over the next few months, and hopefully in the longer run, to realise this potential for the benefits of the community”.

CEO of Australian Friends of Sheba Idan Goldberger told The AJN that the organisation is “immensely proud to partner with world-leading medical institutes, thereby creating a transformative bridge between Israel and Australia and forging a trail in medtech”.

Goldberger noted that this “achievement … cements Sheba’s position as a key connector in Australian healthcare innovation”.
