A Wolf in King’s clothing

TWO years ago, David Wolf was living in America and the Sydney Kings did not exist.

This Friday night Wolf, who is now general manager of the Kings, will be sitting in synagogue for Yom Kippur as the team gets its 2011/12 campaign underway.

“After months and months of pre-season work, it’s very exciting to see the players on court,” Wolf said.

“Like every mad sports fan and every passionate Kings fan, I was an armchair quarterback, and I dreamed of being in this position, but I never thought it would be a reality.”

Wolf said wins on the court are important, but from a business
perspective success can be measured off the field as well. “Off-court

we want to be sustainable, have ongoing growth. new sponsors and a commercial success.”

He said that to attract more fans, the Kings have a new, reinvigorated membership program.

“You used to either buy season tickets or at the door, but now there are kids’ memberships, five-game memberships and a host of different options, because we just want people to become Kings members.”

But this week is all about the coaches and players.

“It’s no secret that we are aiming for a finals position this year, and we believe we have the goods to make it happen.”

And assistant coach Warren Rosen is going to try and help make that happen. “There is a lot of confidence in the camp and we are training really hard so the team has a better season than last year,” Rosen, who joined the team midyear, said.

Rosen was the assistant coach of the West Sydney Razorbacks until the end of the 2006/07 season, but has always maintained the desire to coach at the highest level in Australia.

“I’ve been working hard to get back into this position.
“I have worked on my defensive role over the last few years, and so now my job is to be the defensive coach,” he said.

The Kings’ first game is against the Melbourne Tigers this Friday night, before the team returns to the Sydney Entertainment Centre next Saturday night to face the Breakers.
