Yehuda Gottlieb, managing director at Centuria Bass, has been a senior player at the AJAX Football Club for 11 years.

At 41 years of age, he is still kicking along, now playing for the Sunday Thirds team.

“I quite enjoy it and it keeps me young, playing with boys that are 18 to 19 years old,” Gottlieb said.

“It’s quite funny, when you start playing with them, you can’t understand what they’re even talking about.”

Last weekend Gottlieb’s 18-year-old son Gavi debuted for the senior club playing alongside his dad for the Sundays in their game against Wesley Collegians.

AJAX won 11.9 (75) to 3.2 (20) with Gavi kicking the opening goal.

“When Gavi actually kicked the opening goal of the game, I was so proud; he took his opportunity and really belonged out there. I also ended up kicking a goal, so it was nice to have us both on the scoresheet for the game It was such a special experience, being there for Gavi’s senior football debut.” Gottlieb said.

AJAX is an amateur AFL club established by the Melbourne Jewish community in 1957.

It is Australia’s first and only full Jewish club and aims to provide an opportunity for the Jewish youth of Melbourne to participate in football.

Gottlieb points out that the club unites a cross-section of the Jewish community.

He was proud to be an original member of the seniors’ Sunday Thirds team, which plays their games on a Sunday so that those who keep Shabbat can still play senior games, which usually take place on a Saturday.
