PM speaks to Jewish leaders

Albanese promises community safety

"I want to say very clearly: you are not alone – all Australians embrace you in this time of trauma. We cannot lighten the weight that is upon you, but we hold you in our hearts.

The Prime Minister’s address to Melbourne Jewish community leaders last Wednesday was a subdued and solemn gathering.

Speaking to around 25 leaders of major organisations at St Kilda Shule, Anthony Albanese said his government is committed to keeping the Jewish community safe from antisemitism.

“That kind of hateful prejudice has no place in Australia. Our country is better than that – and our country is a better place because of you and your community.”

At times speaking very quietly, the Prime Minister stated clearly that the government and the people of Australia condemn the attack by Hamas.

“The targeting of civilians and taking of hostages is an affront to all Australians and we condemn these horrific acts. The images we are seeing from Israel strike at every human heart, but I know they fall heaviest on the Australian Jewish community,” he said.

“I want to say very clearly: you are not alone – all Australians embrace you in this time of trauma. We cannot lighten the weight that is upon you, but we hold you in our hearts.

“We grieve with you. We will stand with Israel. We always will.”

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus was present and Macnamara MP Josh Burns introduced Albanese.

“Prime Minister, our communities turn to you, and your steadfast support and your leadership at this time is much appreciated. You have from the very moment these horrible events started stood in solidarity with the Jewish people and Israel, and we thank you for that,” Burns said.

Albanese shook the hands of several leaders as he made his way outside.
