Allegra Spender tours Sydney Jewish Museum site
Spender said seeing the new spaces take shape was “incredibly exciting” as the Museum prepares to expand.
Member for Wentworth Allegra Spender visited the Sydney Jewish Museum last week to get a glimpse of the redevelopment and hear detailed plans of the expansion of its exhibits and education programs.
The Museum’s president Greg Shand and CEO Kevin Sumption gave Spender a hard-hat tour of the building site, which is expected to be completed by March 2027 – doubling the Museum’s space and its expected annual visitor numbers.
“The Sydney Jewish Museum is such a well-loved community hub, and seeing the new spaces take shape was incredibly exciting,” said Spender.
“The expanded exhibitions and education programs will showcase the vibrancy of Jewish culture, and play an important role in education, fostering empathy, understanding and tolerance across our community. A huge congratulations to President Greg Shand, CEO Kevin Sumption, and everyone involved in bringing this important project to life.”
The project will see the Museum’s existing Darlinghurst site expanded to include new, modern, tech-enabled galleries and educational spaces with the capacity to welcome 100,000 visitors per year. It will create a home for Jewish art and culture in Sydney, alongside the Holocaust museum, and will showcase contemporary stories from the community, highlighting the significant connection between the Jewish community and Israel, and the diversity of Jewish culture in Sydney. These are stories that must be heard and that will help the Museum continue its work in combatting antisemitism and all forms of intolerance.
