Labor has committed $300,000 to upgrade amenities at St Kilda Hebrew Congregation if elected to government.

The funding will go towards much-needed bathroom refurbishments and upgrades to the more than century-old building.

“St Kilda Shule is a central part of the heartbeat of our proud Jewish community,” Labor Member for Macnamara Josh Burns said.

“I was so pleased to call Rabbi [Yaakov] Glasman with the exciting news that a federal Labor government will invest in the shule’s future.”

Burns, who was married at St Kilda Shule, added, “It will forever be a place that holds a special place in my heart and for Melbourne’s Jewish community more broadly.

“This announcement will help ensure St Kilda Shule for the long term, providing a safe, pristine and modern community place of gathering.”

Shule president Gerry Bullon said the commitment is “greatly appreciated”.

“As an active shule which prides itself on its work in building bridges with other faith communities … it is important that we provide our many visitors with a welcoming and comfortable environment,” he said.

“I thank Josh Burns for his advocacy.”
