Former Jewish Care CEO Bill Appleby has joined the board of Stand Up – an organisation whose aim is to inspire and mobilise the Jewish community and work together with marginalised communities to tackle Australia’s most pressing social challenges through action and education.

“I am delighted to be joining an organisation like Stand Up which aspires to contribute to a just and equitable Australia, where everyone can thrive.

“What has clearly been exposed through the global pandemic is the fault lines of inequality. While the pandemic has been pervasive and has touched every person across the globe in some shape or form, the reality is the lived experience has been very different dependent on your own unique set of circumstances – or relative inequity.

“Stand Up understands that the ability to walk in another’s shoes is so critically important for us to truly appreciate and empathise for another.”

Welcoming Appleby to the board, Stand Up chairperson Dean Levitan told The AJN, “Bill brings a wealth of not-for-profit experience, community leadership and strategic nous to the Stand Up board. But more importantly, Bill has a big heart, bold ideas and an unwavering passion for positive change in society.”

Levitan added, “We hope to leverage his expertise and experience to propel Stand Up into a fruitful and impactful 2022, during which we’ll roll-out our new Come Together project in which Jewish and First Nations people join forces to have authentic truth-telling conversations about Australia’s history.”
