This colourful rainbow artwork on the building facade of the Sydney Jewish Museum, titled Jewish Pride, is illustrated by local artist, Leo Greenfield.

It’s one of 45 free public artworks in the Rainbow City exhibition that’s part of Sydney WorldPride 2023, from February 17 to March 5, with each artwork representing a year in the history of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

According to the official description of the Jewish Pride artwork, the motifs are distinctively Jewish, framed within the colours of the LGBTQIA+ rainbow.

They incorporate the Star of David, the menorah, and the pomegranate – a Jewish symbol of love – in celebration of queer-Jewish identity.

On the pavement, the colours of the rainbow emanate out of each branch of the menorah, creating a path that guides visitors to enter the museum.

It’s a symbol of the Jewish community standing together in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, in recognition of shared persecution during the Holocaust, but also in celebration of the strides in human rights made in the years since.

Greenfield described being commissioned to create the Rainbow City artwork for the SJM as “a huge honour”.

“The artwork explores the intersections between Jewish and queer identities, and is inspired by the traditional Jewish art forms of paper cutting and wood printing.”

He thanked SJM staff Kira Friedman and Louise Claridge in particular for their support.

The SJM is hosting a series of Pride tours, which take visitors through the museum’s Holocaust exhibition, its Human Rights exhibition, and the Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial across the road in Green Park.

The Pride tours will be at 3pm on February 23, and at 5.30pm and 6.30pm on March 2. Tickets are limited, and can be booked at link.sjm.com.au/PRIDE
