THE Australian Athletics national rankings for U14 and U16 athletes were released last week.

Included in the top 10 in the official list were Maccabi Victoria Athletics Club member Ben Blecher – who is ranked 7th in Australia in the U14 boys’ 200m with a PB time of 24.22 seconds – and Sydney’s Rebecca Solomon, ranked 3rd in the U16 girls’ 2000 steeplechase.

They are two youngsters to watch closely as we head towards the 2022 Australian Athletics Championships, to be held in Sydney from late March to early April.

Meanwhile, in round 7 of the Athletics Victoria Shield League at Lakeside last weekend, Maccabi Athletics Club’s Emma de Jong, 16, was outstanding, posting a 2-second PB in the 800m of 2:17.10 which placed her third in the race.

Other Maccabi athletes excelled in events this round too.

Ori Drabkin (14.58 seconds), Adam Benson (12.88 seconds), Gidon Datt (12.20 seconds) and Myer Vorchheimer (16.56 seconds) all ran well into a stiff headwind in their 100m races.

In her first run this season, Ortal Raikhlin finished ahead of all the women, and most of the men too, in the mixed 5km race, clocking a very fast time of 18:40.80.

And Maccabiah Games aspirant and Glenhuntly Athletics representative, high jumper Noa Kino, cleared 1.67m in a wonderful effort.

Three AVSL rounds remain.
