AT the recent 27th Maccabi World Union (MWU) Congress in Israel, Australia’s Tom Goldman was elected one of the three vice-presidents of the MWU.

Goldman said he is “thrilled and delighted” to take the next step in the Maccabi world governing body.

“I’ve worked for about 30 years in different roles, both in Australia and the world stage,” he said.

“To be elected by your peers to represent Maccabi as a global organisation is a big deal. We represent about 400,000 Maccabi members in 70 countries.”

This adds to a Goldman’s long list of accolades including Maccabi Australia’s Life Member and Chair of the Board of Governors. He also received a Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2000 for his services to sport and community.

“I hope to maintain a relationship between all stakeholders in Maccabi and represent the movement on an international level, which is lots of things not only sport,” Goldman said.

“Maccabi uses sport as a way of maintaining a Jewish identity, which is really important in the Diaspora but also in bringing us closer to the sporting community in Israel.”

Not since 1998 has there been an Australian elected as a vice-president.

Australian Harry Procel also received a prestigious appointment as the Chair of the International Sports Committee (ISC). This committee guides the rules, principles and implementation of the sports conducted at the Maccabiah Games, held every four years in Israel.

He said: “I am delighted and honoured to be appointed to the position of Chairman of the ISC of Maccabiah.

“Sport is the jewel in the crown of Maccabiah and the ISC is the guardian and protector of the standard and competitiveness of this jewel. I hope to see us increase the percentage of female and junior participants at the Games whilst improving the standard and competitiveness of this jewel.”

Procel has been a committee member of the ISC since its inception in 1998.

President of Maccabi Australia, Lisa Borowick was named the Chair of the International Finance Committee. Borowick has been acting in this role for the past two MWU sessions, but has now been officially appointed for the next four years.

In response Borowick said, “I consider it an honour for Maccabi Australia that I have been appointed to Chair the IFC and a privilege for me to have been asked to perform this role.”

Maccabi Australia released a statement following the announcements congratulating its hardworking volunteers who have been allotted key positions within the MWU.
