Battin meets community
"We were delighted to welcome Mr Battin to Beth Weizmann," says ZV executive director Zeddy Lawrence.
On his first visit to Beth Weizmann Jewish Community Centre, State Opposition Leader Brad Battin paused to contemplate a memorial board created by Zionism Victoria (ZV) for Shiri, Kfir and Ariel Bibas, and Oded Lifshitz, murdered by Hamas.
Accompanied by Caulfield MP David Southwick, the Liberal Leader last Friday met with senior representatives of ZV, the Jewish Community Council of Victoria and the Community Security Group, listening to their concerns about the escalation of antisemitism since October 7.
Battin joined other groups based at Beth Weizmann for bagels and coffee and was presented with a challah and books about Israel.
He later posted, “Despite the significant hate and fear that the community continues to experience, including feeling abandoned by state and federal governments, they remain full of hope and optimism for a brighter, better, and united Victoria.”
ZV executive director Zeddy Lawrence said, “We were delighted to welcome Mr Battin to Beth Weizmann for what we hope will be the first of many visits.
“While concerns have been expressed over whether his party will support the government’s proposed anti-vilification legislation, we look forward to building a warm and constructive relationship with him.”
