Since its birth in 2018, BBYO Melbourne has grown into a vibrant and active teen-led movement under the UJEB umbrella. The group has an enthusiastic and capable leadership group that holds regular social and educational events for Jewish teens.

International opportunities have also sent several delegations to exciting BBYO international conventions and leadership training in the United States.

Luisa David, BBYO Melbourne’s President, says that “BBYO has become a vital part of the landscape of UJEB’s teen space, UJEB High, fostering a welcoming environment for Jewish secondary school students to engage and connect with other Jewish teens”.

Students can get involved either by attending a variety of events, or by becoming a member of the BBYO Melbourne “chapter” to help plan events and develop their leadership skills.

Samuel Herz, BBYO Melbourne’s Advisor, believes that BBYO creates a positive space for developing teenage leaders by ensuring that all leadership roles are held by students. This challenges members to take ownership of the success of the movement and provide practical leadership experience.

“From planning a social event down to the grittiest detail, to exploring the dynamics of being a Jew in a non-Jewish environment, BBYO Melbourne teens are constantly learning more about themselves and about leadership,” he says.

BBYO members are already showcasing their abilities through leadership roles in the broader community, with four BBYO members being elected as Glen Eira College captains in 2020 and 2021.
