BELLA CODRON 1950-2009

OUR darling mother, Bella Codron, gave us everything. Not only did she give us life, but she showed us how to live it, always an unassuming yet powerful example of kindness, generosity and humility.

Not only did she give us love, but she showed us the importance of loving others, always looking for the good in others and being there for others.

She was a totally dedicated and devoted wife, mother, daughter, daughter in-law, aunt, sister and friend, who truly cared for and touched all who knew her.

Mum was a warm and caring person who loved being surrounded by her family and friends. She was truly a “people person”, gaining much joy and fulfilment from sharing in the lives of others, especially those of her immediate family.

She and Dad shared such a special bond, underpinned by their deep-seated devotion, love and respect for each other. Over the past few years, Dad began to join Mum on her regular Shabbat mornings to shul, which was “together time” that they both cherished greatly.

Shabbat afternoons were often spent at Bobba’s house, playing tile rummy and having friends pop in. And Mum always had one-on-one time to give to us, her children, whenever we needed or wanted it, sharing wholly in our joys and sorrows.

Mum’s friends were so much a part of her life that we children felt them to be our friends too. She had many childhood friends spread across the globe, with whom she remained in close contact, despite the tyranny of distance and time.

Mum was no stranger to ill-health, as she had to deal with two of us being seriously ill at various times in our lives. During these times she was always by our sides restoring us to health.

She was always conscious of maintaining a healthy lifestyle of regular walks (which she thoroughly loved) and a sensible diet.

So when she was diagnosed with lung cancer at the end of 2007, we were all in utter disbelief. Even while battling the disease, Mum was still a pillar of strength, holding us all together.

She was courageous and dignified. She embraced meditation and relaxation and spent much time reading and learning about ways to help her through her fight. All the while she continued to be there for her family.

We spent much precious time together and were so happy that she and Dad had the opportunity to go away together, including a trip to South Africa to visit family and friends.

Two months before Mum passed away, an enormous weight was lifted from her shoulders as she saw her daughter Yael receive and recover from a kidney transplant, after waiting seven years.

The strength of her prayers and love and her fierce desire for her children’s health and wellbeing cannot be underestimated and we are so grateful that she lived to see this.

Tragically, Mum was taken from us on May 27 this year, leaving us with a gaping hole in our lives and hearts, but also with an everlasting legacy of love and many beautiful memories, which we will cherish forever.

Even in our darkest hour, as we laid Mum to rest, the most magnificent and complete rainbow appeared; a symbol of hope and a promise of her protection.

Mum, we were blessed and privileged to have had you as our mother. We will feel you with us always. We will hold you in our hearts, recognise you in every smile and think of you every day of our lives. And we will see you in every rainbow.

Ruth, Yael and David Codron are Bella Codron’s children.
