Co-location on the new campus is "no more than an opportunity" for Beth Weizmann to consider at this stage.

Beth Weizmann chair Sam Tatarka has assured the centre’s tenants there is “no need to be concerned about the future security of their tenancies”.

The assurance, in a letter sent last week to update tenants on a number of issues, comes after the launch of the Mt Scopus’ Generation campaign in May, in which it was suggested its new Centre for Jewish Life to be built on the site of the Caulfield Hospital in Kooyong Road would be “incorporating Beth Weizmann”.

The AJN understands a number of tenants and board members were upset or concerned as it acts as a home to over 20 community organisations.

The letter however assured current tenants that due to this project being somewhere between 10 and 15 years away from realisation, co-location on the new campus is “no more than an opportunity” for Beth Weizmann to consider at this stage.

The letter also said, “No commitments have been made, nothing has been signed.”

President of Zionism Victoria Yossi Goldfarb told The AJN the Generation campaign is an “exciting initiative” for the community, “But it’s a good 10 years away, and in terms of Beth Weizmann, while we’ve had discussions with Scopus, there are no plans or agreements in place.”

He added, “Ultimately, the [Beth Weizmann] buildings are investments that Zionism Victoria owns … so we hold them in trust and it’s our responsibility to make sure those funds are being used as effectively as possible.”

The letter to tenants also highlights that if there are further developments to report, that they will be kept fully informed.
