Maccabi-AJAX Senior Cricket Club has had a good start to the year, with its First XI side thrashing the CUCC Kings in round 7 on January 9.

That result saw them rise to equal first with the Melbourne Cobras on the Mercantile Cricket Association Sunday A Grade ladder.

Key to their 8-wicket win was bowling out the Kings for just 48 in 27 overs, thanks to superb bowling by Mark Soffer (3/4), Bailey Melzak (4/14) and Benji Jones (3/11).

The Jewish club’s Sunday B grade team also enjoyed an 8-wicket win last Sunday, against Ashwood.

Sharp opening bowling spells by Benji Gore (2/15) and Marley Israel (1/17) put them in a strong position before Nadav Moskow took 4/12 to restrict Ashwood to 118.

Maccabi-AJAX only lost one wicket in their successful run chase, thanks to a 101-run partnership between Charlie Gross (51) and Brett Jacobs (50 not out), and moved up to fifth on the 10-team B grade ladder.

The club’s C grade side lost to Moonee Valley by 14 runs, despite an excellent captain’s knock of 56 not out by Zak Pollak, and their C South grade team had a bye.
