WEARING a kippah and holding a Tanach (Jewish Bible), Australia’s newest Jewish federal MP Josh Burns was sworn in to Parliament on Tuesday, after winning the seat of Macnamara in the May federal election.

“It was a really special moment to be sworn in to our nation’s Parliament to represent the people of Macnamara,” Burns said afterwards.

“My grandparents weren’t particularly religious but they would have been proud to see me sworn in with a Tanach in hand.

“It’s a great privilege to become the 22nd Jewish member of Federal Parliament and the 13th from the Labor Party. It’s a remarkable thing that our humble Jewish community now has six members in the Federal Parliament.”
