Calls for Selena Gomez to be ‘cancelled’
"We need to protect all people, especially children, and stop the violence for good."
One of the most talked about new celebrity relationships is between singer/actor Selena Gomez and American Jewish music producer Benny Blanco, who was born Benjamin Joseph Levin in 1988.
Blanco has released his own music and is also a successful record producer and songwriter having worked with many big names in the industry including Justin Bieber, Khalid, The Weeknd and Rihanna. He talks openly about being Jewish, and has appeared as a fictionalised version of himself on American Jewish rapper Lil Dicky’s show Dave.
Meanwhile, Gomez has received significant media attention for her views on the Israel–Hamas conflict. Following the October 7 massacre, Gomez was criticised for posting a “neutral” statement on Instagram, which included: “We need to protect all people, especially children, and stop the violence for good.”
There are calls by anti-Israel activists to boycott Gomez’s cosmetics brand, Rare Beauty, over claims its CEO Scott Friedman supports Israel. Calls to “cancel” Gomez come despite her public support for Palestinians.
Gomez and her friend Taylor Swift were spotted attending Ramy Youssef’s fundraising event for Gaza in Brooklyn on December 8, with proceeds supporting the American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA). It was reported that Cara Delevingne, Anya Taylor-Joy and Zoë Kravitz also attended the event.
