Celebrating Jewish women in sport
Maccabi has also increased its focus on women's participation in sports and leadership.
The Jewish Professional Women’s Network (JPWN), in collaboration with Maccabi Victoria will be launching its first event of the year “Unstoppable – Celebrating Jewish Women in Sport” on April 3 at 7.30pm in Caulfield. It is sure to be an inspiring evening filled with stories of resilience, sacrifice and triumph.
The panel features Australian Olympic racewalker Jemima Montag, who won two bronze medals in the Paris 2024 Olympics; Australian Olympic rhythmic gymnast Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva, who won silver and bronze medals in the 2022 and 2018 Commonwealth Games; head of wellbeing and mental health at the AFL Players Association Dr Melissa Weinberg; and sports broadcaster Candy Hertz, who will moderate the event.
The JPWN began in 2015 and is dedicated to empowering and encouraging Jewish women to pursue their careers and professional ambitions. It provides opportunities to share ideas, build professional networks and develop skills.
Maccabi has also increased its focus on women’s participation in sports and leadership. In the aftermath of the October 7 attacks and the brutal assaults on Israeli women that were often overlooked by the international community, Maccabi World Forum decided to launch the Maccabi World Union Women’s Forum.
While the forum began as a reaction to global indifference to the sexual crimes committed by Hamas on October 7, vice-president of Maccabi World Union Lisa Borowick said it has manifested into a broader forum to encourage female leadership in Maccabi.
“We wanted to turn it into a really positive environment and support women to actually step up and be more involved around the world and also at the actual Maccabi board level,” she told The AJN.
Maccabi plans to host an annual Maccabi Women’s Forum Summit to establish a vibrant global network of women leaders.
Moreover, a Women’s Leadership in Sports conference in Israel was held on March 18, 2025 and Maccabiah will be held this year from July 8 to 22.
