Wolper Jewish Hospital

Celebrating The First 60 Years

“As you tend to the needs of your patients you celebrate the dignity of their humanity … may the same spirit sustain the next 60 years.”

TO celebrate its milestone 60th year, Wolper Jewish Hospital – the only Jewish hospital in Australia – has put together a fascinating publication of its history from 1961 to 2021.

The beginning of the book, entitled The First 60 Years, features a heartfelt personal message from Prime Minister Scott Morrison, where he writes, “Wolper holds a special place in my heart. In the last months of my father’s life, the people at Wolper cared for him with gentle and loving kindness. And my mother, too, has been given exceptional care at Wolper.”

The Prime Minister also writes, “As you tend to the needs of your patients you celebrate the dignity of their humanity … may the same spirit sustain the next 60 years.”

President of Wolper Richard Glass said the project was both enlightening and inspiring.

“Compiling this history was a humbling and enlightening experience,” Glass said.

“Commencing with the aspirations of its founders and the significant events pre-dating its original founding, it was fascinating to bring to life the key events and personalities that contributed to Wolper becoming the well-

recognised provider of the highest quality healthcare it is today. I am particularly inspired by the manner in which the hospital has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of the community.”

The book relied on Wolper’s own records and archives to compile and is dedicated to Sam Karpin OAM, one of the hospital’s founders and its first president, and features historic photos from the mid 1900s.

Wolper Jewish Hospital has published a book about its 60-year history.

Since opening its doors in Woollahra in 1961, Wolper Jewish Hospital has become one of Sydney’s leading private hospitals, gaining a reputation of excellence in palliative care and rehabilitation.

Wolper is Australia’s only Jewish hospital and takes great pride in providing high-quality care within the framework of Jewish values and ethos to all members of the general community.

The Wolper Jewish Hospital Health Foundation was established in 2014 with the aim of funding health and wellbeing initiatives that will deliver clear benefits to the Jewish and general community.

The foundation aims to support initiatives, programs, projects, services, equipment, capital purchases or assistance that will create positive health and wellbeing outcomes for the benefit of the community.

The First 60 Years has been distributed to all financial members of the hospital and Friends of Wolper as well as to many community organisations, libraries and dignitaries.
