Sunday December 31, the fifth night of Chanukah, marked a significant milestone for Chabad North Queensland (CNQ) as they commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s public menorah lighting initiative.

A floral menorah inspired by the quote “They tried to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds” took pride of place on the stage at the Pier Shopping Centre in Cairns.

CNQ Rabbi Ari Rubin expressed his satisfaction with the organisation’s positive impact on the community, providing a welcoming space for Jews from diverse backgrounds. The celebration offered a range of activities, including crafts, food and entertainment, catering to all ages.

Aaron Standley praised the event, saying, “Tonight we have seen the power of community and the beauty of Jewish tradition, it makes me proud to display my Jewish faith.”

In addition to the Cairns event, CNQ hosted a celebration in Townsville the following night.

Despite logistical challenges, and a five-hour trip each way, Chabad’s dedication to celebrating with the Jewish community in Townsville demonstrated its commitment to serving Jewish individuals and families across the region.

Children delighted in Chanukah-themed crafts and adults enjoyed traditional delicacies.

“The festive celebration brought the community together, fostering a sense of joy and connection,” Rabbi Rubin said.

Further south on the Sunshine Coast, the Chanukah celebration organised by Chabad of the Sunshine Coast was particularly meaningful as the Jewish community came together to light a unique menorah.

The beautifully crafted menorah served as a tribute to the hostages held in Gaza, symbolising hope and solidarity. One side of the menorah featured a mural, while the other side displayed a ribbon dedicated to the hostages. Community members of all ages decorated the menorah which was lit by Rabbi Oshy Goodman.

The menorah was built by Doron Gabriel and designed by artist Ilana Greener.

The event featured a fire show, delicious food, and fun for all ages, in the spirit of Chanukah
