Charity cause in fun run

WHILE most people prepare for a fun run by working out, jogging and eating well, Tali Roth (pictured) was busy raising money – $22,000 to be precise.

Roth raised the funds in honour of her five-year-old cousin, who was recently diagnosed with leukaemia, by taking part in Sydney’s  City2Surf race last Sunday.

Roth, of Melbourne, has always been an active person and when she learnt that her cousin had been diagnosed this year she wanted to do something to help.

“It was kind of my way of dealing with all the chaos that is happening,” Roth said. “I was completely shocked that so many people donated money, it hasn’t really sunk in.”

Roth, together with her boyfriend Marcus Jankie, raised the  funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, which is dedicated to patients and families living with leukaemia, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

She said she never expected to raise so much money.

“My original aim was to go to 100 friends and try and raise $10,000 but the response has been amazing,” she said.

“What better way to make everyone feel special then try and raise a lot of money.”

Sam Cantori, from Team Stretcher, agreed.

Team Stretcher is a group of young Jewish adults who this year, ran the City2Surf for the fifth time while carrying children from Camp Quality on a stretcher to raise money. “We raised around $20,000 but since Team Stretcher was started we have raised close to $100,000 with the help of our sponsors,” Cantori said.

Camp Quality supports children and families who are affected by cancer.

More than 69,000 people helped raise more than $3.4 million for charities as part of this year’s City2Surf.
