It was a proud day at Perth’s picturesque Scarborough Beach on January 26 for the Menora Foundation (incorporating Jewish Care WA), when it was acknowledged as one of only five organisations to be nominated for the City of Stirling’s Australia Day Community Citizen of the Year Award, in the Active Citizenship category.

Menora offers social and community support for those facing hardship within the Jewish community of Perth.

The awards give local governments across Western Australia the opportunity to acknowledge outstanding community contributions, and celebrate community engagement by people from community organisations.

This year, councillor Suzanne Migdale nominated Menora for the Active Citizenship category, which was endorsed by the Stirling’s mayor Mark Irwin.

The category winner was Motion by the Ocean.

With a population of more than 223,000, the City of Sterling is Western Australia’s highest populated local government area.

It is situated 10 kilometres north of Perth’s CBD, and is home to the Carmel School, and a significant portion of Perth’s Jewish community, in the suburbs of Mount Lawley, Coolbinia, Menora, Yokine and Dianella.

The Menora Foundation provides emergency food, rent and utilities assistance; weekly fresh food deliveries to people in need; essential packs to families during Rosh Hashanah and Pesach; school books, tablets and uniforms to disadvantaged children; assistance with medical expenses; crisis care; financial and legal advice; and job-seeking assistance.

Carmel School students regularly volunteer their time to help out in Menora’s vast warehouse, and at the end of term four last year, helped pack Menora’s ‘Chanukah Sunshine’ parcels.

More than 700 people attended the City of Stirling’s Australia Day awards ceremony at Scarborough, where Menora co-founder and vice-president Vivienne Bensky was presented with a certificate of appreciation by Irwin.

Bensky graciously accepted the honour “on behalf of all the dedicated, long-term Menora volunteers, supporters and donors, whose significant contribution to the charity led to it receiving the nomination”.
