AFTER five years at the helm of the North Caulfield Maccabi Soccer Club’s senior side, Andrew Freund has stood down and will take on the new role of director of football in 2013.

“Five years is a long time to coach any club,” Freund told The AJN.

“So now there’s a great opportunity and structure in place for a new senior coach to come in.”

Freund has seen the club establish a regular spot in the State League Division 3 South-East competition, but will now oversee the performance and development of all of North Caulfield’s  teams, as well as coaching the Reserves side.

“I have absolutely no regrets in my time as coach,” Freund said.

“I couldn’t have tried harder to get the most out of the sides I’ve been coaching and there’s been a fair bit of development over the years.”

Freund informed the players and supporters at the club’s best and fairest night earlier this week, which saw Franklin Ngwa take out the top award ahead of Albertus van Leijen and Calum Christie.

Utility Jason Tasker was given the senior coach’s award, while left-back Gideon Sweet was named the top goal scorer with seven for the season.

Christie also won the most courageous and determined award and Nat Vardi’s season earned him the most improved award.

Tal Marom won the Reserves’ best and fairest award, while Akiva Epstein took out the Thirds’ top prize.
