He was a director on the board, but now Barry Carp is the 15th president of the largest sport club in Australia – AFL club Collingwood Magpies – after being elected at its 2024 AGM on December 16.

Carp replaces Jeff Browne, who announced in October that he would step down to focus on his health.

He was elected unanimously, as was incoming board member Dan Rosen, the president of Warner Music Australasia, who is also Jewish, and is a strong advocate for Jewish artists, and combatting antisemitism.

Under Rosen’s leadership, Warner Music Australasia has experienced significant growth in its domestic and international revenues.

Carp is the founder of River Capital, a Maccabi Australia stalwart and masters swimming athlete, and who joined Collingwood’s board in 2021, playing a key role in overseeing the club’s financial strategies aimed at sustainable growth.

He was chosen as captain and flagbearer for Australia at the 2019 Pan American Maccabi Games in Mexico City, where he won gold in the men’s masters 100 freestyle final.

In 2022, Carp joined the restored Maccabi-AJAX Swimming Club, representing it, with his brother Michael, in that year’s Masters Victoria Short Course Swimming Championships.

Carp, 57, said it is a “true honour” to become Collingwood’s president.

“I want to pay tribute to Jeff Browne for his strong leadership over the past three years, and to each president who has served before him”.

“Our club is in a very strong position, and we have set the foundation for sustained success.

“The priority for me as president, and for our board, is to continue to build on the foundations we have set.”

Carp thanked all candidates who contested the election, and congratulated “the successful candidates – Dan Rosen and Gaye Morris – and on behalf of the returning directors, I look forward to working with them in 2025”.He added, “I also want to acknowledge retiring member Christine Holgate for her incredible contribution as a long-term director at Collingwood.

“To our incredible members, I look forward to connecting, and listening to you all, to ensure we continue to offer the best member experience in 2025 and beyond.”
