Comets create history

THE Maccabi Comets have created history by becoming the first Maccabi northside basketball team to finish the regular season undefeated.

THE Maccabi Comets have created history by becoming the first Maccabi northside basketball team to finish the regular season undefeated.

They have won 19 games in a row in the Northern Suburbs Basketball Association Women’s Division-C competition and are now ready for the finals.

In their final regular season match, the Comets easily defeated fourth-placed Green Frogs, 29-18.

Coach Yoel Hyman said it’s hard to believe how well the girls have played.

“The entire team was a pleasure to coach and I look forward to next season in the higher division,” Hyman said.

Betty Velevski was presented with most valuable player award and Tanya Agranoff received the most improved player award ahead of the finals series.

In men’s action, the Maccabi Men’s Lions lost to the Travellers 45-37, but remain in second position heading into the finals series.

The Maccabi Bullets lost a nail-biting match to Astros, 39-38, while the Maccabi Kings defeated NFC, 40-31.

In action south of the Harbour Bridge, the Under-16 Maccabi Rockets lost 21-10 to the Newtown Jets.

After being held scoreless in the first half, Daniel Kupferman lifted his game to score four points, while Nathan Weinstock, Ben Baron and Jordan Abram all scored two points.

Maccabi’s under-14 teams had mixed results. The Jets defeated Reddam D 34-19 to remain undefeated this season. Daniel Seligsohn top-scored with 17 points, while Danin and Jared Silbermann chipped in with eight and six points, respectively.

The Hawks weren’t as strong and lost to Balmain Blaze, 36-14.

Ari Levy top-scored with four points. Coach Bineth said the team fought on well in the second half, but it was over by half-time. “Ariel and Koby [Shapiro] played aggressively, while Brent [Zeh] and Ari took some tough rebounds,” Bineth said.

The Under-12 Maccabi Kings defeated Reddam in a tough encounter, 12-6. Both teams couldn’t sink a basket in the early stages of the first half, but Dylan Sherman impressed his coach with some unselfish plays by stealing the ball and passing quickly to assist his team.

In the second half, Riley Kovkin defended well and blocked shots twice, but it was Alex Burman who top-scored with six points.
Sherman, Adam Ross and Josh Naiman scored two points each as the Kings escaped with a six-point win.

The Northern Suburbs Basketball Association finals will be played at the North Sydney Indoor Sports Centre in Crows Nest.

The Maccabi Lions will play the Falcons at 6pm and the undefeated Maccabi Comets will play the Redbacks at 8pm.
