WELL-KNOWN Melbourne communal identity John Brustman died on Tuesday June 16  after a battle with cancer. He was 65. Brustman was best known for his involvement with the AJAX Amateur Football Club, where he was a committee member for more than 40 years.
As a life member of the club, he was honoured by the Victorian Amateur Football Association earlier this year for his outstanding contribution to amateur footy and was the first AJAX identity to receive the organisation’s certificate of merit some 20 years ago.¬†Only three other members of the club have received the honour since.¬†His weekly AJAX match reports were a back-page staple of the The Australian Jewish News every week of the football season, until only a few years ago.
Brustman and his wife Helen were key figures in the North Eastern Jewish Centre during its boom years in the 1970s and ’80s and in more recent times members of Malvern Chabad.¬†Helen remains an active and valued member of the Melbourne Jewish community.¬†John was buried at the Chevra Kadisha Cemetery on Wednesday.
