All eyes in the pro-cycling world focused on Wollongong as it hosted the 2022 Road Cycling World Championships from September 18-25.

Omer Shapira represented Israel in the women’s time trial and road race, and her husband, Guy Sagiv became the first Israeli to compete in a world championship men’s road race.

Shapira came 24th of 42 in the time trial – just over four minutes behind Dutch winner Ellen Van Dijk – and she came 54th of 126 in the women’s road race.

Sagiv was in a breakaway for most of the men’s road race, in an admirable effort up against the world’s best, but could not sustain that level, and was pulled out on the last lap.

Thumbs up: Guy Sagiv in Wollongong.

Belgian Remco Evenepoel won, and Aussie Michael Matthews claimed bronze.

Before their events, Shapira and Sagiv enjoyed an evening Q&A session with cycling fans from the Sydney Jewish community, hosted by the Bloch family.

Sean Bloch said they really “left their mark on our shores, both on and off the bike”.
