COURAGE to Care has announced that, after an extensive search, it has appointed Ed St John as CEO.

St John is currently chairman of the Australian Institute of Music and prior to this for six years was the executive general manager of the leading Sydney non-profit organisation, The Ethics Centre.

He started his career as a journalist and TV producer and over 15 years held executive roles in the music industry including president and chief executive of Warner Music Australia and NZ and managing director of BMG Australia and NZ.

“To have been able to attract such a high-calibre professional to lead the growth of Courage to Care and achieve its vision of ‘changing people’s behaviour from bystander to upstander for a more harmonious society’ is a testament to the credibility and value of the organisation and its programs,” the Courage to Care board said.

St John is the organisation’s inaugural CEO and his appointment is a key component of Courage to Care’s three-year strategic plan to achieve growth and increase its reach.

St John said he joined Courage to Care for two reasons.

“The first is very simple: I am attracted to organisations that have a clear purpose and an important message to impart,” he said.

“As a former journalist and TV producer, I’m drawn to the challenge of conveying ideas and information in a clear and compelling way.

“Courage to Care has an incredibly important message to share, and I look forward to contributing to the articulation and amplification of that message.”

St John said the second reason is that he enjoys the process of “transforming organisations”.

“Transformation can involve new technologies, new systems and processes, new management responsibilities or new approaches. Or it can mean all of these things at once,” he said.

“I look forward to exploring how we can grow the scale and impact of Courage to Care.”

The board of Courage to Care said it is confident that under St John’s leadership, it will reach a new level in its mission to create awareness of the dangers of discrimination and prejudice, educate to challenge attitudes and behaviours, and demonstrate that every individual can make a difference and transform ‘bystander’ behaviour to ‘upstander’.
