Creating a harmonious musical journey

POPULAR band Three Quarters Hazel launched its new CD, Stick Em Up, earlier this month at North Bondi RSL where several hundred people danced to the sounds of “feel good” music.

The band consists of drummer Grant Colquhoun, Jewish vocalist Cherie Kotek and Jewish bass player Josh Oshlack, who grew up in Melbourne before settling in Sydney.

The band has performed throughout Australia and its music, which blends several genres, attracts a wide range of music lovers.

Earlier this year, Three Quarters Hazel played as the supporting act for INXS at Canberra’s Enlighten festival.

“Our band is about live performance, about transforming the audience into a state of happiness, engulfing them with heart-felt lyrics, well-rounded songs that take you on a sweet journey,” Kotek told The AJN.

“Playing on big stages at festivals is our dream because we just love making people dance and having them sing along.”

The band members take their talents to younger audiences too, as Colquhoun is a primary school teacher and both Oshlack and Kotek run music workshops for children with special needs.

“We play our music to people who really need a lift in their lives, we can all make a difference in this world and one way we do that is through our music,” Kotek said.

“Kids are a great sounding board to try out new material because they are so honest. They also act as our inspiration.”

Kotek is thrilled with the sound of the new album.

“All the songs were created in a studio, with no fillers, and we collaborated with various other bands and artists,” she said.

“We’ve grown so much since our first album, so it’s created from our bond, which is much more powerful now. The vibe of the band is really in there.”
