Creating the next generation

'We've all heard the proverb, 'it takes a village to raise a child', however, AJFN knows that in many cases it truly takes a village to create that child.'

After a hiatus of over three years, the Australian Jewish Fertility Network (AJFN) will be bringing the community together in a multimedia theatrical production, supporting the one in six families in our community who are currently experiencing infertility.

Raw video diaries, live music and onstage performances will bring to life a young couple’s fertility journey.

The evening will also include pieces from embryologist Jenna Pinchuk (Genea), fertility counsellor Sarah Reid (Genea) and renowned fertility specialist Dr Raewyn Teirney of IVF Australia.

Rebecca Featherstone, one of the first-generation of IVF babies to be born in the world, will give her new perspective on the impact of fertility treatment to create not just a baby, but a whole new life.

The recently appointed CEO of AJFN, Justine Seidman, said, “I get goosebumps every time I think about the incredibly moving event that we have created.

“I know that our audience is going to be absolutely blown away.”

In the past three years, due to the impact of COVID driving heightened financial and emotional pressure, the AJFN has seen an unprecedented demand for its financial grants and emotional support services.

There are currently 44 families who are waiting for support in order to continue trying to build their family.

AJFN chair Kerry Gonski explained, “We’ve all heard the proverb, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’, however, AJFN knows that in many cases it truly takes a village to create that child.

“Beyond creating a miracle for one family, we are also creating the next generation and ensuring continuity for our community,” she said.

This year’s event follows on from AJFN’s One in Six documentary, which was broadcast nationally to an audience of over 450,000 on ABC in June.

The major event will be held at the Roundhouse at the University of New South Wales and broadcast online on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.
