Darwin Holocaust Memorial and Education Centre opens
'With antisemitism on the rise we need to give every Australian the opportunity to learn the lessons of the Holocaust'
The Darwin Holocaust Memorial and Education Centre opened last week within the grounds of the Darwin Military Museum.
Director Norman Cramp told NT News, “The feedback has been very positive and complimentary and we think we’ve done a wonderful job.”
Former treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced funding for the museum in January 2022.
“‘It’s both very timely and important to see the Darwin Holocaust Memorial and Education Centre officially open,” he told The AJN this week.
“Funding for the centre in Darwin was one of a series of initiatives announced by the Morrison Government to support Holocaust education across all States and Territories.
“With antisemitism on the rise we need to give every Australian the opportunity to learn the lessons of the Holocaust, a truly tragic and dark chapter in world history.’
Cramp told NT News, “There are an increasing number of Holocaust deniers and one of the ways that we can avoid something catastrophic like this happening again is to educate people.
“If we don’t make people aware, people who ignore history are very likely to allow it to repeat itself.”
Cramp added that the Sydney Jewish Museum were “the lead consultants” on the project.
Member for Solomon Luke Gosling told NT News, “We must continue to learn the lessons from the past and apply them now given how the conflict in the Middle East has deeply affected communities across Australia.”
