Mardi Gras Fair Day this year marked the the first major event of WorldPride, making the day extra special for Sydney’s Jewish LGBTQ+ group Dayenu.

WorldPride is a global LGBTQ+ festival that has been staged in different cities since 2000.

Dayenu, led by its new president, Saul Flaxman, has been planning its WorldPride events for months, inspired by a new direction promoting a wider reach.

“On the day, Dayenu’s stall looked wonderful, the team of passionate volunteers were well briefed and despite the heat and humidity, we had an influx of visitors creating a vibrant buzz, excited energy, and many new connections,” Flaxman said.

“We have seen newcomers, committee office holders, founding members, youth groups, and the many international Queer Jewish friends attending WorldPride, all chatting away and taking photos.”

Dayenu and Emanuel synagogue will co-host a Mardi Gras Shabbat dinner the night before the Parade. This event is part of WorldPride’s events program.

Registration for Dayenu’s Mardi Gras float has been unprecedented in number.

“We will have over 80 people marching, dancing and representing our WorldPride’s theme of Jewish Queer Community Says Enough,” Flaxman said.

“Enough – to the ignorance, denial, narrow-mindedness and mistreatment that has often vexed LGBTQIA+ people including queer Jewish people and our families. We truly cannot wait to take part in this global-scale experience, flaunting our rainbow feathers and making our voice heard.”
