Marching under the Mardi Gras theme of ‘Free to be’, Dayenu’s float had ‘Free to be Jewish’ emblazoned in large lettering along the side of the truck.

The float featured sparkling Stars of David and ’25 years’, marking 25 years since the ground-breaking first Jewish float in the Mardi Gras in February 2000.

Participants included Emanuel Synagogue Rabbis Jacqueline Ninio and George Mordechai; Hinda Elton, wife of The Great Synagogue’s Rabbi Ben Elton, as well as former NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff.

To mark their 25th anniversary, Dayenu is focused on thanking the Jewish Community for 25 years of love and support. It is due to the work of Dayenu founding members and the love, acceptance and support of the wider Jewish community that Dayenu shines today, and its LGBTQIA+ members have become included members the Jewish community.

“Dayenu received a loving welcome from the spectators at the Mardi Gras Parade with many showing love heart hands as we passed by them,” said Dayenu.

“Our spirits where elevated to receive such love and support from the wider community, after so many awful events aimed at our Jewish community in recent times.

“We acknowledge with gratitude the generous support of The Jewish Board of Deputies, and The Executive Council of Australian Jewry, who assisted Dayenu with defraying the costs of organising our participation.”
