On June 22, 10 days before Australia goes to the polls, The AJN is co-hosting an election debate with Zionism Victoria featuring the three key candidates for the marginal seat of Melbourne Ports.

The event, being held at the Beth Weizmann Community Centre, will feature the ALP incumbent Michael Danby and his opponents from the Liberal Party, Owen Guest, and The Greens, Steph Hodgins-May.

Melbourne Ports, which has 19,563 Jewish constituents according to the latest Census figures, has been held by the Labor Party since Federation but support has steadily dropped over the last 20 years.

In the 2013 election, the Liberal Party received 41 per cent of the primary vote while Danby, received only 31.7 per cent of the primary vote.

However, Danby – who has represented the seat since 1998 – received 18,000 preferences, as opposed to the Liberals’ 4000, which meant he secured another term in Parliament.

The debate will give voters an opportunity to ask the questions that matter to them, whether it’s about issues specifically of concern to the community such as their and their parties’ stance on Israel, the peace process, the Iran deal and combatting terrorism, or on more general issues such as the economy, asylum seekers, climate change, marriage equality, or capital gains tax.

AJN national editor Zeddy Lawrence said, “Your vote at this election in the seat of Melbourne Ports is crucial and could decide if Labor, Liberal or the Greens represent you in Parliament.

The AJN is more than just a newspaper. We are committed to keeping the community informed and educated across many platforms, and this debate, co-hosted with Zionism Victoria, is a great avenue for our readers and the residents of Melbourne Ports to hear firsthand where the candidates stand on the crucial issues that affect them directly and that are close to their hearts.”

The election debate will be held at Beth Weizmann at 7.15pm on June 22. To submit a question to be asked on the night, email election@jewishnews.net.au.
