Dementia Awareness Week, September 18-22
Navigating life with dementia is not just challenging for the person themselves but their entire support network.
It is estimated that more than 421,000 Australians live with dementia. Without a medical breakthrough that number is expected to increase to more than 810,000 by 2054.
Navigating life with dementia is not just challenging for the person themselves but their entire support network.
More than 1.6 million people in Australia are involved in the care of someone living with dementia.
Dementia Awareness Week from September 18-22 is an incredibly important time to raise mindfulness of the impact it has on the lives of many.
At Emmy Monash, dementia care is a big part of the service provided.
More and more residents are entering aged care with the disorder, and the age of the residents can vary from late 60s to late 90s.
Training staff is key, and Emmy Monash works closely with Dementia Australia.
These staff are now mentoring other staff for dementia care across the organisation.
More importantly, Emmy Monash is helping families and the wider community in understanding the impairment and how best to care for those living with it.
Tanya Abramzon, Emmy Monash CEO, said, “We believe that providing exceptional care for individuals living with dementia goes beyond just meeting their immediate needs.
“It requires a commitment to ongoing staff training, showing compassion and patience at all times, and engaging and educating the broader community to foster a supportive environment for our residents.”
Emmy Monash and Caulfield Hebrew Congregation are hosting Melissa Levi, a Sydney clinical psychologist and author.
Levi specialises in older people’s mental health and dementia.
She is the author of We Need to Talk About Ageing and will be in Melbourne on Wednesday, September 28, speaking at two events, one at 3pm and one at 7.30pm.
Both events will be taking place at Caulfield locations, details to be provided upon booking.
Emmy Monash and Caulfield Hebrew Congregation encourage anyone in the community to join, whether already personally impacted by dementia or wanting to know more about the years ahead.
