Djokovic ends Schwartzman’s campaign
Diego Schwartzman is out of the Australian Open after losing in straight sets to world No. 2 Novak Djokovic at Rod Laver Arena.
DIEGO Schwartzman’s impressive Australian Open campaign came to an end today (Sunday) after going down in straight sets to world No. 2 Novak Djokovic.
Fourteenth-seeded Schwartzman had the crowd on his side as underdog as he temporarily slammed the brakes on Djokovic’s third-set surge, but was unable to hold back the tide, with the Serbian world champion winning the match 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
The agile Argentinian returned some unlikely balls, particularly in the second set, including a few short lobs from Djokovic, engaging his opponent in some lightning volleys.
In the third, he even chased a Djokovic return, and with his back to the net swung around to successfully slam it home, delighting spectators at Rod Laver Arena.
The Australia Day stoush ended Schwartzman’s impressive Australian Open campaign.
“Today was a tough match … totally different … I was running almost in the defence position many, many times because he [Djokovic] was serving so good,” Schwartzman told The AJN.
“I was trying to keep in focus and not thinking about the score. It was tough and I’ll try to improve for the next time against him.”
And Djokovic told media, “Diego is in form and he hadn’t dropped a set in three rounds and obviously he can be a very dangerous opponent from the baseline if you give him time.
”I knew that and I stepped out on the court with a clear game plan,” he said.
In other tennis news, Italy’s Camila Giorgi went down to German 17th seed Angelique Kerber 2-6, 7-6, 3-6 on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Israeli junior girls singles player Shavit Kimchi lost her encounter with the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala, who won 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
