Dodgy deal
It's bad enough that Scott and the university management have treated our community with utter contempt while rewarding the repeated bad behaviour of the encampment organisers.
As additional information comes to light, it is becoming more and more apparent that University of Sydney vice-chancellor Mark Scott’s deal with Islamists to vacate their encampment was downright reckless.
It’s bad enough that Scott and the university management have treated our community with utter contempt while rewarding the repeated bad behaviour of the encampment organisers.
In doing a deal with a group known to be affiliated with the extremist Hizb ut-Tahrir – a group banned in the UK, across the Arab world and in my other countries – he has dangerously enabled anti-Western elements in Australia, demonstrated that their heinous tactics work, and has placed our country’s national security at risk.
We now know that Hizb ut-Tahrir praised the Hamas-led October 7 massacre, rapes and kidnappings in which 1200 Israelis were brutally murdered. They openly seek an Islamic caliphate to implement sharia law globally. And thanks to Scott, a representative who espouses its ideology – and perhaps has a direct connection to it – could soon be helping to review the university’s partnerships.
That Scott negotiated this agreement after being made aware of Hizb ut-Tahrir’s presence on campus is further proof of his foolhardiness and detachment from mainstream Australian values.
The national defence and investment implications of Scott’s rash bout of idiocy mean this deal cannot be allowed to stand.
After sitting on the fence, dishing out platitudes and pairing “antisemitism” with “Islamophobia” in every speech while ostensibly pro-Palestinian activists have sullied our campuses for nine months, it is time for the government to show leadership. Its job is to keep the citizens safe and this is not just about us Jews anymore.
Sadly, however, the horse may have bolted. Scott’s message has been heard loud and clear, both by those who wish us harm and our own community.
The University of Sydney can no longer in any way be considered a safe campus for mainstream Jews. Jewish school leavers should reconsider studying there. Jewish philanthropists should reconsider their financial support.
As for Scott, the former ABC managing director has proven he is as dangerous to the nation in his current post as he was at the helm of our national broadcaster.
He should be made to immediately step down.
