Dream over for Kellerman

AUSTRALIAN wheelchair tennis star Adam Kellerman has gone down to world number four Dutchman Ronald Vink in the round-of-16 competition at the 2012 Paralympics in London, ending his dream of winning a medal at his debut Games.

After winning his first two matches, Kellerman was defeated by Vink 6-3, 6-2, and after his loss in the round of 16 of the doubles tournament with partner Ben Weekes, his London campaign has come to an end.

Israel’s Paralympic stars have already won three bronze medals at the Games, all coming from the swimming events.

Dual medallist Inbal Pezaro finished third in the finals of the 50m and 200m freestyle (S5), but just missed out on her third bronze for the Games after finishing fourth in the 100m breaststroke (SB4).

Fellow Israeli swimmer Itzhak Mamistvalov picked up the country’s other bronze medal, after placing third in the 200m freestyle (S2), touching the wall just 100th of a second quicker than countryman Iyad Shalabi.

Argentinian judoka Jose David Effron picked up a silver medal in the 81kg category, after the 22-year-old lost to Ukrainian Olexandr Kosinov in the final.

The Jewish State was also represented in the pool by Inbal Ganful Schwartz, Erel Halevi and Yoav Valinsky, who all missed out in their respective races.

Tennis stars Noam Gershony and Shraga Weinberg have made it to the semifinals in the quad singles and will now take on each other for a chance at the gold medal, while Boaz Kramer fell just short in the quarterfinals.

Weinberg and Gershony will also battle it out for bronze in the doubles.

Israel’s sailing teams in the three-person sonar keelboat and the two-person SKUD 18 keelboat are out of medal contention, after mixed results in the first eight races.

Rower Moran Samuel finished sixth in the final of the women’s single sculls, while mixed doubles sculls competitors Olga Sokolov and Reuven Magnagey crossed the line in third position of the non-medal-winning final.

Equestrian rider Yonathan Dressler finished well off the pace in  the mixed team test (Grade III), the mixed individual test (Grade III) and the mixed individual freestyle test (Grade III).

Table tennis players Shai Saida and Liran Geva both missed out in their singles competitions and will now team together for the men’s team (Class 4-5) quarterfinal, while shooter Doron Shaziri placed sixth in the men’s R6-50m Rifle Prone-SH1.

Cyclists Kobi Leon, Nati Gruberg and Pascal Berkowitz kicked off their campaigns in the road races as The AJN went to print, while long distance runner Gadi Yarkoni will race in the men’s marathon (S12) on Sunday night (AEST).
