When Chabad of Bondi celebrates the opening of its new centre later this month, it will mark the culmination of a long journey to build a new facility to replace its old, tiny shule.

“This is a product of many, many years of hard work, the toil of many dedicated individuals,” Chabad of Bondi spiritual leader Rabbi Yehoram Ulman told The AJN.

“This will be not just a beautiful place to pray in but also a centre of Jewish growth, legacy and continuity.”

Just around the corner from Chabad of Bondi’s old location, the complex includes a synagogue, library, a young adults’ lounge, function hall with kitchen and a kids’ space. It will also be the location of a new headquarters for the Sydney Beth Din.

Assistant rabbi Rabbi Eli Schlanger said the community centre is designed “to seamlessly blend the traditions of the older generation with the vibrant energy of the new”.

“This unique space honours the past while embracing the future, fostering a warm and welcoming environment for all,” he said.

Upon entering the centre, visitors will be greeted by a glass cabinet that will showcase family artefacts, photographs and biographies, allowing the community to learn about and connect with fellow members. It will be on rotation, celebrating and commemorating the life cycle events of four families each week.

Another cabinet preserves the history of the old synagogue, “ensuring that the legacy of our past continues to inspire future generations”, Rabbi Schlanger said.

“For our younger members, we’ve created an interactive children’s space, complete with a miniature synagogue, kosher shop and performance stage.

“Themed around Jewish festivals and holidays, this space is designed to inspire and educate, making Jewish life engaging, fun and cool.”

The young adults space “is both gorgeous and serene, offering a perfect environment for relaxation and study, a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the outside world”, Rabbi Schlanger said.

“Our overarching goal is to infuse the traditional warmth of the synagogue with the lively spirit of youth, inviting them to discover the beauty of Torah and prayer through vibrant, engaging experiences.”

Rabbi Ulman concluded by saying the centre “should be a pride and joy” to the Sydney and Australian Jewish communities “and the whole Jewish community around the world”.

The new centre will open on Sunday, September 22 in the presence of former Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel David Lau. A procession will walk from the old synagogue to the new centre, where a new Torah will also be dedicated.
