Encouraging the community’s shining stars

After successfully developing CareNow and HoopNow, two programs dedicated to supporting children with special needs, founder Jordan Sandler has launched a new disability aid program called ShineNow.
ShineNow is an all abilities performing arts initiative designed to assist kids with disabilities in building confidence, social skills and friendships, while also developing their practical drama and performance skills. Facilitated by passionate young adults who come from a range of backgrounds in both disability support and performing arts, the program aims to encourage participants to bring out their inner actor through social games and theatre sports. Those involved will also get the opportunity to create and perform their own original skits.
“Growing up, children, particularly those living with a disability, are always pressured to fit in, to be regarded as ‘normal’. But this insistence means they’re at risk of losing so many amazing talents and unique traits,” said Sandler.
“ShineNow is a place for all those kids to come and be encouraged to express whatever it is they want to express.”
CareNow parent Shelley Giles, who has been impressed with Sandler and his team’s ability to break down barriers, said she was thrilled to hear about the organisation’s expansion into the performing arts space. “Our son, who has ASD (autism spectrum disorder), often has so much to say and a constant need to express himself,” she explained, looking forward to seeing him find new ways to channel his energy.
The program has just begun and will be running every Sunday morning in Elsternwick.
