Swibel scores match winner in Israel

Former Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers player Jordi Swibel, who recently joined Israeli second division club Hapoel Nof Hagalil, scored his first goal in that league in round 6 last weekend.

The goal was the match winner in a 2-1 victory over Hapoel Rishon Lezion, delivered with a left foot strike.

An injury kept the 23-year-old out of the first four rounds, but he came off the bench in rounds 5 and 6.

“It was great to score my first league goal for the club,” Swibel said “but more importantly it was three points for the team.”

Both teams were undefeated leading into the tournament’s first grand final played since 2019, with the final score 12.8 (80) to 10.13 (73).

Bright start in champions series

Having been Easts association premiers in season 2022, but losing grand finals, Maccabi-Hakoah Junior FC’s U14 and U15 boys’ teams qualified for the knockout Football NSW Champion of Champions series.

They both won their second round matches last Sunday, advancing to the quarter-finals.

After being behind 0-1 at half-time against the Wyoming Tigers, Maccabi’s fired-up U14 boys’ side dominated the second half, to win 5-1, with goals scored by Ben Palmer, Joseph Graff, Josh Chesler, Mark Greenberg and Zac Strasser, while substitute keeper Jono Goldberg saved a penalty goal attempt.

In U15s against a physical Terrigal FC side, Maccabi-Hakoah led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a 20th-minute Aaron Buchman goal, and finished the job late in the second half through JJ Raskin’s boot, to win 2-0.

TENPIN BOWLING (Sydney)

Trophies for Libbert and Gutierrez

Seven men and four women took part in Maccabi Tenpin Super League’s annual Yetty Bennett Memorial Tournament late last month.

In the men’s, Luis Gutierrez automatically qualified for the final as the clear leader after the six-match round robin stage, with Howard Baram then edging Anthony Houston in a play-off match by 203-191 (with handicap) to book his place in the final.

Baram, who only had a two-pin handicap advantage in the final, couldn’t match the in-form Gutierrez, who prevailed by 236-196.

In the women’s, it was Deidre Libbert who automatically advanced to the final, in which she faced Fiona Rothman, who earlier defeated Naomi Baram by 229-225 in a play-off. Rothman had a 19-pin handicap advantage over Libbert, but that was not quite enough in the end.

Libbert bowled consistently well to earn a three-pin (with handicap) win, by 160-157.

The Maccabi NSW Tenpin Bowling Club’s 2022 Greg Small Memorial Tournament will be held on November 28.

TENNIS (Sydney)

Top shot for White City

Maccabi White City Tennis Club has been shortlisted as finalists for the 2022 Tennis NSW Awards, in the categories of coaching excellence, and outstanding league.

Category finalists are in the top three tennis centres in NSW, which is a great achievement.

In recent years, Maccabi White City has won the awards for coaching excellence, and for outstanding competition, as well as being a finalist several times for Club of the Year.

The award winners will be announced at a cocktail reception on October 30, when trophies will be presented by former Aussie women’s tennis star Casey Dellacqua.

AFL GRAND FINAL

Cats fans celebrate in Israel

Even though Aussie David Cherny has lived in Israel for more than 30 years, he is still a passionate Geelong Cats fan.

When they won the AFL premiership in 2007, he flew his family to Melbourne to witness it.

This time that wasn’t an option, so David, his wife Gaby, and son Tomer (pictured from left) wore Geelong T-shirts with ‘Cats’ written in Hebrew.

David watched this year’s huge grand final win by the Cats at the ‘Mike’s Place’ pub in Tel Aviv.

Afterwards, he celebrated by waving a Cats flag while doing a victory lap around the Dizengoff Fountain.
